WHAT IS FIBERGLASS?

It is a composite material formed by fine strands of glass, which are intertwined and bonded with special resins. This material combines the durability of glass with the flexibility of fibers, making it an ideal choice for a variety of applications in various industrial sectors.

To make fiberglass, either liquid glass is used from a melting furnace, or glass marbles are melted. The molten glass is forced through superfine holes. Once the yarns are cooled, they can be interwoven to form the mesh.

This is often combined with resins to enhance the final material, resulting in an extremely strong and durable composite material.

The basis of fiberglass

Fused silica, derived from quartz and other siliceous minerals, serves as the primary basis for fiberglass. This inorganic material is subjected to high temperatures, which causes it to melt and stretch into fine strands. Fused silica is known for its durability and strength, providing the relevant structure for glass fibers.

Additives to improve properties

In addition to fused silica, various additives can be added to improve the specific properties of the glass fiber. Metal oxides, such as aluminum, calcium or boron, are commonly incorporated to strengthen the fiber structure and improve its tensile strength. These additives can also influence the adhesion between the fibers and the resins used in the manufacture of fiberglass composites.

Properties

Strength and light weight

  • Fiberglass is known for its high tensile strength, making it ideal for applications that require strength without compromising weight.

  • Despite its strength, fiberglass is remarkably lightweight, making it easy to handle and transport.

Insulation

  • Acts as an excellent thermal insulator due to its high surface area to weight ratio. This allows it to dissipate heat efficiently, which is crucial in the construction industry.

  • In addition to its thermal capacity, fiberglass also offers good electrical insulation, making it safe for use in environments with risk of electric shock.

Chemical resistance

  • Fiberglass does not corrode, making it ideal for use in wet or chemical environments. This is particularly useful in sectors such as transportation and construction.

  • Depending on the type of fiber, such as type C fiberglass, it can be highly resistant to chemical agents without altering its composition.

Forms of use

Fiberglass is used in a wide range of applications due to its versatility:

Construction industry

  • Fiberglass wallpaper: used to reinforce walls and ceilings, providing additional protection against cracks and fire.

  • Fiberglass mesh: used to reinforce plaster and prevent cracks, especially in places exposed to structural movement.

  • Fiberglass boards: used as wall panels resistant to harsh conditions, ideal for use in rooms with high humidity.

  • Fiberglass mat: popular in construction and other industries for thermal and acoustic insulation.

Controlling material properties

Additives not only strengthen fibers, but can also control other key properties of the l composite material. These include thermal and electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance and environmental degradation. By carefully selecting and dosing these additives, manufacturers can tailor the properties of fiberglass to suit a wide range of industrial and construction applications.

Applications in construction projects

It has proven to be an invaluable resource in a variety of applications within the construction sector, thanks to its unique properties and versatility. From creating solid structures to protecting against the elements, fiberglass offers innovative solutions that improve the efficiency and durability of construction projects.

Material reinforcement

One of the most common applications of fiberglass in construction is its use as reinforcement in a wide range of materials. Adding glass fibers to materials such as concrete, glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) and other composites significantly improves the strength and durability of these structures. Fiberglass reinforcement provides increased tensile and flexural strength, which helps prevent cracks and increases the service life of structures.

Panels and composite panels

Composite panels and panels made of fiberglass are widely used in construction due to their strength, light weight and ease of installation. These materials are used in a variety of applications, including exterior facades, wall cladding, roofing and flooring. Fiberglass panels are weather, fire and chemical resistant, making them an ideal choice for demanding environments and high-performance construction projects.

Waterproofing and protection

Another important application of fiberglass in construction is its use in waterproofing and weatherproofing systems. Fiberglass materials, such as membranes and coatings, are used to seal and protect surfaces, exposed to moisture, such as roofs, decks and swimming pools. These products provide a durable barrier against water, preventing leaks and structural damage.
